For the beginners a very informative article about website design and development

1. A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words.

A picture no doubt enhances the overall look and feel of your website. However, like the quote above a picture file is rather big in size and too much of it can make your website seem like a drag to download. Although most internet users are now cruising the information super highway at broadband speed you should still cater to those who are still using dial up connections ( and mind you there are more then a handful). As a rule of thumb I recommend you keep your image size to less then 30k where possible. Your webpage should be able to load within 5 seconds. Please do not forget about users who cannot see the images on your website by providing alternate texts as description to the images. Most webpage creation programs like Macromedia’s DreamWeaver allow you to this easily.

2. Navigability & functionality come before artistic excellence

It is absolutely of no use to make a website that is a masterpiece from an artistic point of view but a complete failure on the web! Why? Because the users simply don’t know how to get around the website! You should always bear in mind what car manufacturers always emphasize, ease of accessibility to functions. Make sure your navigation is clear and absolutely idiot proof (no offence to those of you out there who always get lost in a website no matter how good it is).

3. Avoid Mystery Meat Navigation.

This is one of the biggest mistakes a website can make as well as one of the most frustrating experience for users. This sort of navigation requires the user to mouse over an image in order to navigate to a link without actually having any idea where they are heading. It is only when they click and hold the mouse over the image that they can see the actual link.

4. Tables – Split them up

Ever been to a website whereby you find yourself staring at a blank screen for a certain period of time before finally as if by magic the whole website just pops out of no where? That is because the designer of that website probably put the whole web page within a single table. Tables are used in web design to help align images in a website as well as to create a structure to the layout of a website. It makes everything neater as well as enables the designer to create abstract layouts easily. I will show you how to use tables as part of your design later on but for now please take note that your user would be far better off if you split a single table on a page into smaller tables as required. It helps the user to prepare for the long wait in a way as the smaller tables with their contents and images will be downloading first so users can anticipate and not leave your website in frustration.

5. No Pop-up Windows Please

Pop-up windows have been on the rise recently on the web. These are small little windows that pop-up with some information or key advertisement on them. They do nothing but clutter the user’s screen unnecessarily. It is best if all links open within the same window. However exceptions for the use of a pop up window may be for situations like if a page contains a link list then it might good to place all these links within a pop up window. However as a general rule avoid using pop up windows they make your life as well as the user’s easier. Furthermore, operating systems like Microsoft Windows XP are now equipped with Pop-Up Blocker (this tells you how welcome pop ups are to users).

6. Use Plain Vanilla Fonts

Have you ever heard of fonts such as Neuropolitical? No? Well it exists and it is a fanciful font with a futuristic typography to it. You might be surprise to know that I am actually discouraging you from using such fanciful fonts. Why? Can you imagine the frustration for your users of having to read your entire website in default times new roman all because they do not have the font you used installed on their machines. Restrict the usage of such fanciful fonts to your graphical designs only. Stick to the good old combo of Arial, Verdana and Tahoma.

7. No revolutionary plug-ins

For those who have never heard of the word plug – in , do not be alarmed it is simply a executable such as a program or animation or audio/video stream that requires an external software to be installed or plugged in (hence the name) into your computer to run.

Most web designers would jump at the chance of using as many plug-ins some of which have never even been heard of before. They think that this fanciful plug-ins would impress the user however more often then not the opposite occurs. It draws visitors away from your website. No one likes to wait for an extra minute or two to allow software to download on their computer only to watch some senseless animation or listen to some audio which has no importance to the website’s core purpose. Have you ever seen websites like Yahoo! Google or Lycos? You will notice they do not have plug-ins at all. However like everything else in this world, there are exceptions even when it comes to plug-ins. For example, if you would like to use animation on your website you can use Macromedia Flash and you can create a link from your site to enable users to download its plug in via Macromedia’s website so they can view your site’s Flash content.

8. Never underestimate meta tags

Meta tags are a group of special key words which are used to describe some aspects of the content of your site. It is widely used in HTML based websites. The information that is provided within a meta tag will enable search engines to index your webpage so that people using the search engine to search for a particular information might be able to find it on your page more easily. In short, meta tags when properly chosen can help your webpage gain more exposure and better listings on search engines.

9. User is King

Like every business in the real world, the customer is always right and so it is on the Internet. Keep your customers happy and focus on providing services and features on your website which focus on adding value to your customer’s experience when they visit your website. How can you do that? Simple, just make sure you have a good storefront for your website and if you are selling services make sure your customers can easily find the service they need and get prompt service from you. Always remember to put your customers at the front of your mind! It can make all the difference between a casual surfer and a serious customer.

10. K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple Stupid

This is the most common abbreviation we have all come across at one point or another in our lives. Yet, it holds so much of truth in it. Simplicity in anything; especially a website is the key to making it a huge success. Flashy graphics and fancy navigation may all be eye candy however, they serve no real purpose and in no way do they contribute to the website’s ability to draw visitors. Even if the website does draw in visitors it is mostly casual surfers who are just there to check out the website’s functionality and not actually utilize its services or buy from it.

SEO is one of the most cost effective advertising mediums. Furthermore, SEO is completely accountable. You can monitor the exact traffic you are receiving, what keywords you are receiving the traffic for, and the geographic zone your are receiving it from. Most importantly you can track the exact conversion rate of your site and your ROI.

SEO is one of the fastest growing marketing mediums. In an economic downturn, the marketing department is usually the first department to see cut backs in budgets, not to mention the size of the staff base. Companies are seeing tremendous value in SEO. Despite the downturn, the SEO industry is rapidly moving forward.

How to choose an SEO company
Choosing the right SEO Company can save you a lot of time and money. The easiest way to choose your SEO company is to look at the results that they have been achieving for clients. Many SEO companies will show you the rankings that they have received for their clients. It is important to look at how hard these keywords are to achieve top rankings for. For instance, if a SEO company is showing you first place rankings for a tradesperson at suburb level, it is fair to say that this is an easy word to compete for. However, if they are showing you top rankings for the most competitive keywords such as weight loss, web design, web development or banking then they are genuinely hard rankings to receive. In addition, it is recommended to speak to clients that have used the SEO company that you are looking to engage. Find out how they performed, what their delivery of service was like, if they were transparent in there communication, if they received regular communication and reporting. SEO is still a black art and many SEO experts will like to keep their trade knowledge to themselves. Choose someone that is open and transparent about their work.

How long till I see my rankings improve?

SEO takes 6-12 months for a very thorough campaign. If your site has been live for a few years and you have some good quality links pointing to your site it can take less, depending on the competitiveness of the keywords being optimised. In SEO there are two types of keywords that you can optimise for. The first is short tail i.e. ‘weight loss’ and then there is long tail keywords i.e. ‘weight loss recipes’. If you are wanting to quickly increase your organic traffic, it is recommended to begin optimising for the long tail keywords. The short tail keywords can take much longer to optimise for as there is generally a great deal more competition for that keyword.

If you are a new site, Google will take some time to trust your site. Many SEO experts talk about Google Trust Rank. This means that Google not only takes time to trust your site, it wants to see consistent increments in link popularity to your website. If Google sees a Sharpe increase in the number of inbound links to your website when you are new, you run the risk of hitting their link spike filters. Should this be the case and you grow your incoming links too quickly, you will be sandboxed or unindexed.
You should build links to your site in a consistent manner. Not only in a consistent manner, but also you should use a variety of link building techniques to build links to your site.

Some link building strategies are:
1. Directory submissions
Directory submissions are where you submit your site to general directories or niche directories. When you are submitting your site to directories it is important that you concentrate on good quality directories. Quality is far better than quantity. You can determine the quality by looking at the page rank of the home page, page rank of the sub-categories, if the sub categories have been cached by Google and if the listings in the categories are well maintained. Avoid like the plague directories that are randomly linking sites in categories. These could be link farms.

2. Article Submissions
This is where you write unique content on your industry and then submit it to article directories. This is a great way to build quality back links to your site. The key is to code the link correctly.

For instance if I wanted to link back to my website, the most contextual and effective way to link back is SEO. This link is considered to be a themed and/or contextual link. Google will see this as a very relevant link. If you write articles and link from the article body, you should see good results in your search engine rankings.

3. Blog posts
There are a few ways that you can use blog posts to help your rankings. The first way is to leave comments to posts on posts. If you are being active on blogs, for industry relevant blogs you will be considered to be active in your industry.
The second way is to get in contact with the blog owner and offer your unique content to them. In return you should get an about author link to your site. Many blogs are screaming out for content. You will get traffic, link juice and be considered an authority on your subject.

4. Forums
Forums are indexed very quickly by search engines because the content is frequently updated. Further, forums get a lot of traffic and if you are a trusted forum member you can generate plenty of traffic and get contextual links to your site. I would advise getting in contact with the forum owner before placing any links on forums. Let the forum owner know of you credentials and let them know that you can add to the community by giving expert advice. In return you ask the forum owner if you can put your link in your email signature.

5. Bookmarking sites
Google likes to see that your links are created naturally. This means that the content that you offer on your site is good enough quality that people want to link to it and they want to share it on social networking sites, or reference your content as an authority on the subject. This is the best form of linking. The key is to create fresh and unique content.

How much does SEO cost?
The cost of the campaign hinges on many thing.
- How competitive your industry is
- How many keywords you are optimising for
- What link techniques you incorporate
- How large your site is

After your initial campaign has been completed you should look into a maintenance campaign. This will give you long term stability in your rankings.
Hopefully this article has set you on the right track and answered your SEO questions. Now is a better time than ever to SEO your site. Over time SEO will become more competitive and in turn expensive.

Now-a-days when nearly all businesses have their website, if you are new to this concept might think why do you need a website? The reasons can be many and it depends on the goals to be achieved. If you possess great products or services that needs to be reached out to many people and make them aware of your company, having a well-designed website can be the best idea.

If compared to websites. other medias like newspapers, television, radio, magazines, even a physical store front has limited exposure to the target audience and have geographical limitations also. If you desire to expand your client reach from local to international market, websites can be very helpful in reaching to millions of people worldwide. Lack of a professionally designed website might be keeping you away from gaining the prospective customer base.

Today’s net savvy customers do expect to find you online and get information about your company. If you are not found via search engine results, you might loose many prospective clients. Having a website is as important as being listed in the phone book directory.

Creating a professional proficient website can be strenuous task for the newbies, especially those lacking technical knowledge about computers and its programming languages. You might come across many sites offering free webpages which can be complicated or time consuming or not according to your expectations. Therefore you can hire services of a web designing company.

The cost of website development and designing varies according to your designing needs and the company that you hire. You must look out for web designers that can build user-friendly webpages with proper navigation links. Websites that are popular among users are easy to use and understand and have customer friendly features.

You can also add your own template or some design to your web page, prefer selecting a website building program that gives you the liberty to design page according to your preference and have complete control over it.

Whether you have a small or big business a website is needed by all. People are preferring internet more than newspapers or phone books for getting the information about certain product or service.

The conventional ways of advertising has been overshadowed by online advertising. The cost is also much lesser than usual means. A website can be made highly attractive and elegant with useful information about your company’s products and services.

Recession : Cutting the jobs

Just the other day I received a question on Twitter from Adam at studioapp

“Hi.. how are you? Do you have any tips for me how to get into the UK design industry (Other than sending applications to agencies). Thanks!”

Which got me thinking about how difficult it was for me and some of the fellow graphic design students I studied with to get a job in the design industry back in 1999 (yes that long ago!) straight out of design college. I snapped up a job with a Central London design agency in Soho within 2 weeks of leaving college but looking back it wasn’t really the right job for me then. Though just 13 months later I changed positions and worked for a great design agency based in London Bridge and learned a huge amount as well as working on lots of different types of projects as a designer.

Anyway competition was fierce then BUT the amount of graphic design and other design courses available in art colleges and universities up and down the college has grown hugely since then.

So here are a few tips on (like Adam asked) “how to get into the UK Design industry”

The Portfolio:
Having a great design portfolio is a must. To be honest your design portfolio is the most important thing on this list, its what you’ll mainly be judged on. It must be well presented and include at least 6 or more design projects. Think about the kind of work the agency your applying to does and try to tailor your portfolio towards that. For example if they specialise in corporate identity and branding work try to include work of this kind.

Be ready to talk about your design work, what inspired you, why you approached the project in the way you did, even choice of typeface, colours, imagery etc. Show them some of your sketchs and development work, some agencies what to see your scribbles more than the finished work as it shows your design process and how you think!

Before taking your portfolio along to job interviews, make sure you show it to a people (tutors, other design students) talk them through it, get them to ask you questions about your design work and respond with suitable answers. This will get you used to talking people through your portfolio, making you a more prepared for the interview.

Work Experience:
Offer to do some work experience with a design company who’s work you really admire (for free if you have to!), even if its just a week then spend that week wowing them, making the tea, producing great work, take an interest in everything relating to that design company. It is a good way to get your foot in the door but also don’t be too pushy or cocky, you might think your a great designer but remember there is a big difference between design college and the real world!

If the company really like you during your work experience they might offer you a full time job!

Finding Work:
Send your portfolio as a PDF etc to as many design companies (that your interested in) as possible, then after a few days give them a quick call to check they have received it.

Another alternative and one that worked for me is to approach a design recruitment agency. I contacted Major Players (there are many others!) when looking for a new graphic design position. They interviewed me and I took them through my portfolio and skills set, based on this they then contacted me when suitable jobs became available. This worked very well as they got me a new job within 2 weeks.

Dress code:
There isn’t one as such. Wear what your comfortable in but also look like you have made some sort of effort! That said I wouldn’t recommend turning up in a suit! Remember what you wear can be seen as a reflection of yourself and your design style or preferences.

Behaviour:
Be yourself, be calm and open to discussing your work and the work of the design agency. Remember to ask questions about what work they produce and what your role would be. One thing I found useful was to ask if someone could take you around the studio, afterall that is where you’ll be working if you get the job and you need to see what sort of environment you’ll be working in. It also easier to ask questions as you move around and see how they work.

Research:
Remember to do some research on the company that is interviewing you, as they are likely to ask you what made you apply for a job with them, what sort of work do they produce, what awards have they won (if any), why do you want to work for them in particular?

Keep trying:
Above all keep trying and keep looking at ways to improve your portfolio. If you go for an interview and they don’t give you a job, don’t worry, your work just might not be suitable for that particular design agency.

So hope this has helped, good luck!

You originally accepted the challenge of a real estate agent for many reasons. It may have been due to your love for meeting new people, or finding just the right house for the specific needs of a family. Then you discovered all the planning and paperwork involved in the process. There is marketing, contact management, client acquisition, client retention, design, along with many other administrative and development issues.
In a perfect world you could hire someone who would only come to work when you really needed them and they would always know just what to do. They would never call in sick, take up space in your office, or bother you with insurance concerns.

Welcome to a Perfect World

The idea of a virtual assistant may sound unique and perhaps even a bit futuristic, but a Real Estate Virtual Assistant can provide the perfect opportunity for you to do what you do best without the hassle of many undesirable elements of real estate sales including transaction coordination, marketing design work, client database management, data entry, lead follow up, and lead generation.

An online virtual assistant can aid you in critical times, allowing you to concentrate on what you enjoy most, serving your clients and selling property.

Practical Reasoning

Virtual assistants never take up room in your office, they never call in sick, they are not entitled to unempoyment and best of all they take care of you in some very specific ways.

Reduce administrative tasks
Increase market awareness
Handle design tasks
Coordinate Transactions
Free up time for agent
Track and follow up with leads
Stay in touch with past clients on agents behalf
Perform direct mail marketing campaigns
Configure and maintain contact database
Develop and manage email marketing campaigns
You might already have a capable assistant in your office, but by learning more about the services of a Real Estate Virtual Assistant you might think twice about hiring a replacement when they leave.

What do Virtual Assistants do?

A virtual assistant will make your business their business for as long as you need them. They take care of all the details you know are needed, but hate doing. Ask yourself, who do you think would do a job better someone who wishes they were not doing it or someone that makes it their specialty?

A virtual assistant is someone who makes use of available technology to help you build and maintain your business.

Change Can Be Good

We understand this idea may seem strange to the sensibilities of some, but as communication methods, technologies, and software have advanced so have opportunities for cost effective outsourcing that allow real estate agents to pursue more lucrative endeavors.

If you have a need for an assistant, but wonder about the cost effective nature of such a hire, consider the benefits of a virtual assistant providing both a viable short and long-term strategy as well as saving you time and money.

Benefits of Hiring a Certified Real Estate Virtual Assistant

Adding a virtual assistant to your team benefits your business in the following ways:

There is minimal training necessary!

You do not compensate Virtual Assistants for: benefits, insurance, vacation, holiday, sick pay or retirement plans nor do you have to pay Social Security, Medicare, Worker’s Compensation, payroll tax, or unemployment taxes. There are no employee cost associated with a virtual assistant

There are no expenses for computers, office equipment, software, or furniture. Virtual Assistant use our their own equipment, work from their office, and do not take up space in yours.

You can increase your productivity during busy times without hiring additional employees

You can handle special projects without sacrificing another aspect of your business or disrupting your office. You only pay Virtual Assistants for the time they spend on your business

You have access to a professional with skills and technology that you may not have time to learn, implement, or maintain

You will have more free time to focus on growing your business or to spend leisurely! http://yourassistant.in

Do you have a real estate business? If the answer to this question is yes then you may want to think about hiring a real estate virtual assistant. This is because a real estate virtual assistant provides you with a cost effective way to maximize your profits in much less time while increasing your overall productivity. Does this sound enticing to you? Chances are it does which is why you may want to continue reading to find out what a real estate virtual assistant can do for you.

To begin, it is helpful to understand the role of a real estate virtual assistant. In essence, a real estate virtual assistant has the same role as a traditional secretary or assistant except that you communicate with them via the Internet instead of within your office. They are also much more skilled in Internet commerce which can be extremely helpful to you if you want to expand your real estate business online but lack the technical skills to do so.

When you work with a virtual assistant you can define their responsibilities before officially hiring them for a project which gives you the freedom to search for an expert in the area you are looking for aid. Since you hire a virtual secretary on a project-by-project basis you never have to worry about benefits or taxes since they work in a freelance environment. Thus, you have the freedom to purchase their services when you need it and take some time off when your budget gets tight or once you get a project underway.

Thus, you have much more freedom and flexibility while working with a real estate virtual secretary but at the same time you still receive a high level of service. Plus, since a virtual assistant works out of their own home or office space you do not have to worry about building a space for them in your office or purchasing them any office equipment. This makes virtual assistants a very cost effective solution especially for small real estate businesses who are looking for ways to branch out without large upfront costs. – http://yourassistant.in

Elements of good design

It does not matter how much time and money was spent on the creation of a website, if the first impression is not eye-catching, your chances to attract an interested and returning audience are extremely slim. Like most people, in the first five seconds of his stopover, a visitor will decide if he will stay or move on.

Elements of good design

The majority of websites are written documents that rely on good prose to make a dramatic impact. Add some bells and whistles, e.g. pictures, charts, funky buttons and dividers, and the occasional video clip and you think you have hit the jackpot.
Unfortunately, there is more than “good looks” involved in creating a superb website. Just ask yourself, what do flash animations bring when people click off, even before your animations have downloaded? Instead of bringing a chuckle to your audience, you will get a sneer! People dislike waiting and they want to feel welcome and well treated. If you want their attention and sell your goods or services, give them just that.

The art of blending colors and fonts

Developing a web design strategy is an excellent idea and can be used for the home page, as well as all additional pages. Start by defining your target demographics. Believe it or not, but what message you are trying to convey with your website, or what services or goods you are trying to sell will largely determine what kind of colors and fonts should be used for your titles and text. Just picture a party supply site in all shades of gray, or a Harley motorcycle supplier all in pink. Would you shop there? I didn’t think so!

Scale matters, and not just for your text content. Buttons, pictures and everything else displayed on a page should be in proportion and in balance. Items that are too small may be overlooked, while massive, unbalanced productions may scare visitors off.

Be informed

A demographic analysis will make you understand your audience. Knowing what your visitors are looking for will help you in your product selection and marketing strategy. Visit the sites of competitors and see what makes their site so popular. Inform yourself about the products you are selling and find out which selections are selling like hotcakes. What you find stylish, may actually not be a top seller!

Keep your expectations real

The best way to extract customer profile information is by chatting with potential clients and thoroughly researching the market you want to infiltrate. As much as we want to believe our gut feeling, when it comes to e-commerce, it is better to rely on hard facts and real statistics.

Let me ask you a question. Do you believe that when you are building a website for an assisted living, or retirement home, your target audience should be seniors? If your answer was yes… you were wrong! Although some seniors may be having a peek at the site, it is more likely that baby boomers, or those just past the 40+ mark will be checking out options for their parents and grandparents. Knowing this, you will have to adjust your writing style, content and illustrations to fit a younger crowd.

However you, the novice web designer, decide to build your website, always treat your audience with respect. Even though you may be living on the other side of the country, customers will still expect the same courtesy as if they were going to their neighborhood corner store. They may even want to communicate with you, and if you are really interested in what these customers have to say, you could always add a forum or feedback page to the site. A direct customer service email address would not hurt either.
As much as it may hurt your wallet, if you do not have all the skills to optimize your website, please, hire professional assistance. You might be a great technical writer, or perhaps even a poet, but that tone of writing may not be appropriate to market your products. Also, getting your website noticed by the search engines requires skill and understanding. Do not think that key search engines will shoot your site right to the top of their pages just because you used your product’s name a hundred times on a single page… It really does not work that way.

The conclusion is simple. There is a big difference between selling boots, sandals and pumps at the mall, and presenting your selection on the Internet. They both have their advantages and they both can be quite successful. Just follow the rules and do your research… good luck! www.studioapp.com
